Travel Tips: Be certain your pet is in good health. Some
states, all foreign countries and most airlines require proof of rabies
vaccine (administered within the last year) and a health certificate.
Beginning a week or so before a car trip, take
a few short rides with your pet. This will acquaint your pet with travel,
being in a carrier (if necessary), and all the strange noises associated
with traveling. Plan to keep control of your pet at all times. This means
your dog should have a strong leash and a muzzle if necessary, and your cat
should be in a carrier. Keep car windows closed far enough to prevent your
pet from escaping. NEVER leave your pet unattended in a closed car during
hot weather. Heat builds rapidly in an enclosed space, resulting in heat
stroke and death within a relatively short period of time. If motion
sickness has been a problem or your pet becomes over anxious while riding,
medication is available to prevent vomiting and calm your pet. Always
restrict food before traveling. Offer water whenever you stop. Be certain
to use a leash when exercising your dog in a strange place. Upon arrival,
give food and water sparingly every hour, with lots of love.
